The Prestonsburg Tourism Commission is seeking an innovative leader who will be a critical and highly visible leader, supporting the City of Prestonsburg in creating a desirable community and destination. The Executive Director will manage all tourism activities including developing, planning, implementing and evaluating marketing, advertising, and public relations programs.
The individual will have a comprehensive knowledge of the tourism industry and trends; strong oral and written communications skills and the ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with public officials, regional attractions, businesses, citizen groups, and the general public; provide leadership with co-workers and business partners; prepare and present comprehensive marketing, financial, and administrative reports. The Executive Director of Prestonsburg Tourism will be responsible for the following:
- Oversee the daily operations of Prestonsburg Tourism, including supervising staff and coordinating independent contractors for events, conferences, tours, and related activities.
- Develop and implement strategic marketing, advertising, promotions, media, and public relations campaigns designed to increase visitation and strengthen awareness of tourism’s economic and community impact.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for Prestonsburg Tourism while working closely with City agencies and community stakeholders.
- Prepare for and coordinate monthly Tourism Commission and Executive Committee meetings, ensuring members have the information needed to make informed decisions.
- Create strategies to increase overnight stays, visitor spending, and economic growth through events, leisure travel, and group tour opportunities.
- Analyze tourism data, market research, and visitor trends to guide budgeting, advertising, and programming decisions.
- Coordinate motorcoach tours, conferences, media visits, FAM tours, and tourism-related events.
- Serve as liaison between the Tourism Commission, City Council, City officials, and community partners.
- Represent Prestonsburg Tourism within state and regional tourism organizations, including Kentucky Travel Industry Association and Kentucky Tourism.
- Oversee management of tourism websites, social media accounts, promotional materials, and marketing databases.
- Oversee the management of The Prestonsburg Welcome Center. Order merchandise, make sure marketing materials are placed accordingly, welcome visitors & the community and answer any questions they may have about the area.
- Prepare and administer the annual operating budget while monitoring expenditures and approving invoices.
- Research, prepare, and manage grant opportunities and funding sources at the local, state, and federal levels.
- Communicate and collaborate with employees, volunteers, businesses, attractions, lodging and restaurant partners, media outlets, government agencies, and the public to coordinate tourism initiatives and activities.
- Attend industry meetings, conventions, workshops, and trade shows to remain informed on tourism trends and strengthen industry partnerships.
- Build relationships with travel writers, tourism publications, tour operators, and travel professionals on regional, national, and international levels.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, hospitality, tourism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience in tourism, sales, marketing management or similar fields.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and overnight travel as needed to support organizational goals.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Successful completion of a criminal background check.
